6. How is child support calculated in Ontario?
Child support is usually calculated under the Federal Child Support Guidelines. The
table amount is based primarily on the paying parent’s gross annual income, the
number of children, and the applicable province or territory. Parents may also share
section 7 special or extraordinary expenses, such as childcare, medical costs, dental
expenses, extracurricular activities, and post-secondary education costs. Child support
is the child’s right and generally has priority over spousal support and other financial
claims.
